Using the Iwi Hapū Names List
Search to find standardised terms for iwi and hapū in New Zealand. Use them when cataloguing and describing relevant material.
The list identifies alternative spellings and variations of forms of names, and maps them to the established form of the name.
It is derived from the waka, iwi, and hapū names which had been used to describe collections in the Alexander Turnbull Library, and has been reviewed by Te Taura Whiri, the Māori Language Commission.
The names listed are not a dictionary, and shouldn’t be seen as authoritative beyond their use in libraries and archives.
How the Iwi Hapū Names List works
Extended use
The iwi and hapū names in this list are used as the basis for the creation of Library of Congress subject headings with the addition of the qualifier (New Zealand people). The National Library of New Zealand is submitting subject heading proposals when it has bibliographic items attached to these headings.
About the project
The Iwi Hapū Names List was developed by the Māori Subject Headings Project, jointly sponsored by LIANZA, Te Rōpū Whakahau, and National Library.
It has been developed so that cataloguers and descriptive archivists have a reliable and comprehensive resource to help them assign appropriate and consistent terms when describing material.
The project that became the Iwi Hapū Names List was begun by Robert Sullivan in 2001. Robert undertook major work to ensure that the list was established and we are indebted to him for his foresight and endeavours on this project.
